codes and conventions of chosen genre

As our chosen genre of music is pop, we wanted to research other music videos in the same genre to collect ideas and inspiration on the possible things we may wish to include.

Katy Perry portrays a dream like fantasy world.

When watching some pop videos online at YouTube.com I was trying to look at similarities between the different music videos. Firstly most of the videos especially that of female artist contain a lot of 'fantasy' and 'make believe'. Almost portraying an innocent and child like side of their personalities. Which may also appeal to one of their main target audience of young girls.Often however this portrayal of a fantasy land come hand in hand with a large amount of voyeurism which uses the desirability of the female artist. Which allows the artist to appeal to two of their major audience Men and young women.

Voyeurism in Pop videos

Mostly during the videos I have been studying the artist plays a main role in the videos narrative. Keeping themselves as the main focus of the video, and helping them to create their star image/brand. In this case Katy Perry uses her body, and looks at unique selling points. Also her quirky unusual fantasy style video helps to gage fans from a younger audience.

Intertextuality of Katy Perry's 'california gurls' would probably take inspiration from films such as 'charlie and the chocolate factory'. That conjure up dream like worlds, surrounded by candy and sweets.

Often the pop videos contain a lot of dance routines, due to their catchy and high tempo style. Usually the artist is the main focus of such routines, and the artist is mainly featured in the middle surrounded by others who look similar to him/ her. But it remains that they are the main focus for the audience and the other dancers are simply for backup.
