Social Media

Social media is a way of promoting your product. For example when promoting an artist and their music using social networking sites can be a quick and easy way of spreading the word as people who like what is being promoted can then pass it onto their friends and can be publicised easily. Also as majority of people now have access to Internet either through a phone or home computer through technological convergence the song/artist and music video can be spread all in one place and can be accessed in various different ways such as downloading. If creating a fan page or fan base you can also buy advertising slots at the side or top of social networking sites so it isn't necessary to be a part of it whilst being involved in it.
Twitter is a new social networking site that has become increasingly popular over the last few years, It was created in March 2006 and launched in July. This site allows people to send and view posts known as 'tweets'. This site does not have an acceptance option so this allows anyone to follow your blog or you to follow theirs meaning it is a lot easier for people to access your page therefore it would make it easier to access what it is you are promoting. In this case we are promoting the artist Kate Nash and the song and recently created music video Merry Happy. By following a large amount of people on the site it gains people 'followers' and by advertising the name in large letters its more obvious so people are more willing to explore your page.
Facebook is a social networking site which was extremely popular and is still largely in use. Created by Ark Zuckerburg and his college friends Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. Facebook was released February 2004 so sometime before Twitter and as twitter has become more popular Facebook users have decreased. Facebook can be used in a similar making your own independent profile about yourself you can then view request and accept various other people. Once you have a facebook profile you can then go onto creating your own fan pages. By adding Friends and accepting friends you increase the number of people who can view your posts, therefor making it simple to advertise a fan page you may have created. Facebook fan pages are quickly spread throughout friends as once a page is joined others can see that people are joining the page and then feel the need to also join. This is also a quick and easy way of advertising through social media as you can upload photos and videos.
Google+ is a recent idea which works the same as Twitter and Facebook. It is similar to a blog and has the same functions yet you can view other peoples blogs freely in a similar way as twitter you can 'follow' certain peoples blogs and by posting pictures and updates on your artist and the music video or whatever it is you want to promote. Although this is not as popular as the others and isn't often used.

Dairy of a day in Editing

Day 1 - 10th October
The editing equipment we used
Because of the problems we had with using software outside of school we have began to use the school editing equipment 'Pinnical'. Firstly we have had to scan our camera for all of the footage to be transferred into pinnical once all our footage was on the computer we need to put the song into the document so that we could sucessfully put the footage together with the song so the correct shots were in the right areas to match the narrative and rythm of the song
Lip syncing in the music video

Day 2- 13th October
Now that all our footage has been put virtually in place we have to go through it and ensure that all the shots are edited smoothly and that all the shots are in the correct areas. We also needed to make shure the editing went together with the beat of the for example at the begining of the video at each beat change we tried to put in a different shot. Furthermore we had to make sure that none of the shots were too long at that the rapid editing suited the tempo of the song also it was important that the areas of the song that contained lip syncing were perfectly in time with the music so that the editing looked professional.

Day 3 - 17th October
Now we were happy with the placement and editing of most of our shot we then had to do the difficult task of trying to make the shots that went with the lines 'dodododadododadadododadododadododado' chance each time a new 'do' or 'da' was said so shots went perfectly in time. Reflecting the tempo of the lyrics. This was ecspecially difficult when trying to edit the shots of the post it notes for each do or da ad it was virtually impossible to get each post it note to appear on the beat. After a huge time spent trying to get each post it note to appear at the correct time we were happy that we had sucessfully edited it to flow as smoothly as possible and suit the songs tempo as much as we could possibly do.

Day 4-20th October
Resturant Footage
Since our last editing session we have filmed more footage for the resturant scene so we just had to begin by uploading our new footage and then try to condense the shots so that they fit into the gap we had previously left for the section to be put into. This piece of editing went well and we sucessfully filmed and then edited the resturant clips.

Day5- 22nd October
The sunset idea that fades out at the end of the video
We tried to make the shots of the flower flash in at each beat
By this time we were happy with our videos progress so far and we felt asif we were almost finished, so we asked two of our media teacher to watch what we had completed so far. There feedback was very positive they said they really liked the summery and quirky theme of our video and that they felt we had some very creative and clever ideas within it, They also said they felt as if we had a good range of interesting shots. However they felt the editing had altered only slightly so that each shot was exactually on beat they suggested we sit listening to the song tapping our feet to the beat to ensure we knew exactually when each temp change occured. Furthermore one of our teaches suggested that we try to capture a sunset on film to be put at the end to finish of the video so that it faded out to a sunset. We took on board this advice and spent the day tidying up the editing we had done and later that night we went outside to film the sun setting this went well and was put at the end as was suggested to fade out with the music.

Re-filming shots

when we asked for feedback for our current music video we were given the same outcome repeatedly. When the female character is on the roundabout a point of view shot is used to show the spinning sky as the lyrics say 'i can be alone i can watch a sunset' our peers and teachers pointed out that in the shot the sky was actually very cloudy and they suggested we re filmed the shots in the middle of the sun setting just so the action in the video coincided with the narrative of the lyrics as we intended it to. So i looked up on the internet what time the sun would be setting on the 26th November unfortunately me and my teem members were not able to get  a lift all the way to the location where we originally filmed and the shot we needed didn't involve a huge amount of scenery , so we decided to improvise going out a sunset and spinning each other round on an office chair while we held the camera in our hands to create the effect of us being on the roundabout again i think this went really well and the shots looked so much better with the lighting of the sunset and you could barely tell that we were not actually on the round about we once filmed at this idea aloud us to save time and we didn't have to rush over to location meaning we had more time to make the shots look really good

Music

As a group, we decided that before we brainstormed ideas for our story board we would analyse the lyrics of our song so that we could understand the pragmatic implications and gain a greater feel for the song to help us  create a better video.

After analysing the lyrics we came to the conclusion that the song is a story of the artist looking back on a serious relationship that she once had and as she reminisces she remembers at one stage in their relationship when they were a bit rocky, but she wanted to work it out.  Eventually by the end of the song she realises that she doesn't feel the same any more and learns that she can cope without him.

Throughout our music video we hope to portray our understanding of the song.

Props

Our watering can bag is used in the scene where the flowers are growing around the female character not only does the prop suit the floral nature theme of the song but it also reflects the fun, quirky  theme of our video. And we think is represents the personality of our character and Kate Nash herself. Also hinting again at the characters sense of childlike innocence.

The Vintage book is present in our video during the scenes where the female character is alone in the park we used this book because we wanted to portray the female character as intelligent and well educated but we wanted the book to have an interesting, artistic and beautiful front cover furthermore, we wanted our character to appear into interesting and we also wanted to further portray her vintage quirky style.

The female characters Wellie Boots are seen in most outdoor scenes we chose these boots as there not your normal wellie boots and we hope that they make the character seem really unique and different but still feminine and quirky with the small bow and pixie boot style make her seem Innocent and childlike. As these boot are made by Vivienne Westwood we wanted to portray our characters keen eye for fashion.

The tea set is used in the scenes of our female character in the field when she is alone having her own tea party, making her seem childlike innocent and sweet. Which encourages the audience to feel sympathy for her when analysing the breakup element of the song. Furthermore the tea set is miniature sized we we think represents her childlike personality.

This is the vintage vanity case that is used in the video and is used by the female character when leaving the house to escape her broken relationship as she frantically packs her clothes into it to leave the house. Again we wanted to convey elements of a quirky and vintage theme and for the female to come across as having a classic and vintage style. Furthermore it is a interesting item that is unavalible in mainstream fashion outlets making the character seem again uniquely fashionable and interesting. Furthermore we believe it represents the overall style of Kate Nash.

The notice board is present in the female characters room which is often used to visually portray the couples relationship and a picture of the couple can be seen on this board and the love note once given to the female is also taken from the board. It is used as a gateway into the females feeling and personal objects included help the audience feel closer to the characters and gain more of an understanding of their relationship. Furthermore i think this type of board is a common object in many young women's bedrooms which i think makes the audience relate to her more and recognise her as a normal girl who has the same relationship problems as them.

The heart cushion is present in the scenes of the female in her room usually miming in a monologue style to the audience and she clutches onto the cushion it is made to represent her holding on to her broken relationship.Again i think this is a quirky bedroom item that she has in common with many other teenage women.

In the very last scene the female chracter sits alone on a bench looking through a scrap book that we made together using old photos of couples and various other decorative scrap booking. We wanted the female to apear as if she was  reminising and coming to terms with her broken relationship.

costume mis en scene

This polka dot dress is continually worn in the outdoor shots we chose this dress as it is flowing brightly patterned and classical i think that the bold pattern but classic style represent the theme of the video but also the female characters personality as shes a bright personality with a quirky dress sense.Furthermore i think the dress stands out in the greenery area of the park at makes the characters personality stand out from the background

This floral dress is worn in most shots in the summery field area and seems to represent her state of mind in the shots in that she is moving on and blossoming as if she is a blooming flower. Furthermore it goes with the videos theme of summer and floral. Furthermore it suits the bright personality again of our main character.
This outfit is worn at the part of the song in the restaurant where the female has waited ages for the male to turn up to what appears to be a dinner date. The outfit is supposed to portray that she 'is not the person that she turned out to be' in that shes waited so long for him she had morphed into an old and lonely woman. Now wearing dark dismal colours and not acting as her usually bright self.We chose this outfit as we wanted to pick stereotypical items to present the granny idea clearly to the audience but also represent her change in personality as if the males absence has affected her happiness and her personality has darkened from what it once was in previous shots.
The next outfit was chosen when the the male is leaving we wanted to give the effect of frustration for the female who has been trapped in a relationship where her only happiness comes from the dusting and cooking we wanted to portray a trapped personality. Showing her in a low skirt portrays her sophisticated personality but also give a portray of her housewife role at this present time.
At the end of the music video the theme of the video and scenery begin to change to feel like autumnwith that the female character outfit seems to reflect her own sence of change asif shes grown herself and her image and personality seem to toned down too with maturity. Her bright vibrant attires seems to have evolved with the the season.

Settings and Locations

Becca's House:  The very first place we filmed was at Becca Mais's house, we spent a lot of our time at this location making sure we filmed the essential and necessary shots needed to progress with making our music video.

King George's Playing Field, Brentwood:
On the same day at filming at Becca's house we also filmed at our next location, King George's Playing Fields.  The day we chose to film here had the perfect weather condition for the shots we wanted to capture and so we took full advantage of this and spent the whole day at this setting.  We have also recently spent  time here recently taking pictures for our digipak.

Shenfield Common, Brentwood: This location was the very last place we filmed, the shots filmed here were a late addition to our music video; the weather had taken a turn for the worse as it was getting further into the year.  However, the weather reflects the mood of our character at that certain point of the video during the shots we filmed.

Nando's, Brentwood: This was one of our last locations to film. The shots filmed here are several of the last shots used in our music video, we all enjoyed filming here and this is shown in the quality of our work.

All of our locations are in the same area of Brentwood, we have tried to keep the theme of our music video which is one of floral and quirkiness- with the majority of our settings and locations being outdoors.  I believe that the planning and thought put into our locations and which places would be most suitable for our video has made our video more successful.

Second Day of Filming

On our second day filming we again filmed during a double Media lesson this time we only need to shoot a small amount of scenes with our male actor which take place mainly in one location we began by making some cheese on toast which is then filmed being brought into the room by the female for the male which is when they can be seen playing chess together as they spell out 'merry happy'. We had to film this from varying angles as a lot of shot angles made the scrabble pieces difficult to read. Then we went to a quiet street to film the scene were the couple meet for the very first time when they bump into each other and the lyrics say 'watching me like you never watched no one...' This was difficult to act out as the female was required to drop her keys which is not easy to do purposely and the female had to hold them secretively in her hand until she threw them on the floor .Then we filmed a scene were the male was seen leaving the house over the shoulder of the female watching on from the stairs this was hard to get both the females head and the male in shot. Finally our day was ended with the female miming the lyrics of 'chattin on the phone cant take back those hours' which was filmed while the female appeared to be on the phone.

First Day of Filming

For our first day of filming we wanted to get all of the outdoor shots finished as our video has a prominant summery and flowery theme so as summer is almost at an  end we made the most of it and went down to our local park before the whether turned. We had 2 lessons of meida that afternoon and we asked our teacher if it was possible for us to be able to miss them to begin filming. So we began filming at approximately 2pm once at the park we needed to find an area of dirt were we could grow the flowers around the female character luckily that day the park keepers had just picked summers dead flowers from the flower beds which left us a clear space in which to do the scene. Furthermore we needed to do the picnic scene so we were able to fine a clear field area were the female could e seen alone as the lyrics say 'i can be alone' however we did have a problem concerning continuity during filming as often the sun would go behind a clowd causing the lighting of the scene to chance inbetween shots. Are day was finished by going back to rebeccas house to film the scenes from the girls bedroom and the cheese on toast.
