Filming Locations

The Bedroom- For scenes of our female character miming to the audience we wanted to put her in a typical environment for that of a teenage girl her bedroom. It was important that the bedroom was bright vibrant and quirky just like the personality of the female character. We chose the bedroom that was painted bright pink with paining and vinyl covering the walls to reflect her retro and quirky personality we also wanted the room to pink pink and childlike to reflect her venerable personality and make the audience feel more sympathetic towards her.I think filming in this location went really well and when you watch it, it feels as if you have an insight into the character environment and the audience immediately feels closer to her.

Nandos- When the line about sitting ion restaurants was on we wanted to show the female waiting for her male in the restaurant. Until she had waited so long that she appeared to dress as if she was alot older therefore aging as she waited for him. Filming at Nandos restaurant in Brentwood was a great location as it was almost empty when we were in there and we managed to sit at a large table directly in the middle of the restaurant meaning we were able to get more background in and show that the female was alone and isolated.

Field scene

Field scene- We wanted to film the 'picnic scene on a sunny day in a wide field-space with no people in the background  in order to make the female seen lonely and vulnerable. It was important to film this scene asap so that it was a summery day and reflected our 'summery flower theme'.

Park scene- We used shots of the female character alone in a park enviroment to make her seem innocent and childlike as the lyrics repeat 'i can be alone....' showing her alone on the swings and on benches

Kitchen- For the kitchen scenes we wanted to have a bright and vibrant area to reflect our females personality. The kitchen is where the cheese on toast is made.

Focus Group

Together we conducted a focus group which required us to collect a group of 5 females aged 16-18 which we consider our target audience. Together we discussed topics surrounding music videos and particularly Kate Nash. We wanted to ask questions that allowed us to access their habits for watching music videos in order to asses what music channel we may want to show our video on in order to reach our wanted audience.  We also asked them what aspects of music videos they liked and what elements they did not like. We also asked  them what music videos they enjoyed and what music videos they didn't so we could  analyse their preferred videos and take inspiration and ideas from them to better create a successful video that will appeal to this audiene. After we played the song to the group we asked them if they had any ideas to create an appealing video.

The topics we disused were:
1)Do you enjoy watching music videos?
2)When do you usually watch music videos?
3)What are your favorite music channels?
4)Have you ever heard any of Kate Nash's music?
5) What are your favorite songs by Kate Nash?
6) Do you Know the song Merry Happy?
7) What sort of themes do you think we can include to portray Kate Nash's style?

Some had forgotten the lyrics and tune of  'Merry Happy' so we play it to the group once again

8) Do you have any ideas that we may be able to use in our video?
9) What theme ideas do you think we can use?

Last Day of Filming

As a group we felt that it was best to get our filming completed quickly so that if there was to be a problem whilst editing and finish our music video, we wouldn't be rushed to sort the problem out.  We all agreed that it was a good idea to make the most of our double media lesson today to finish the filming we had left in order to progress in the progress of making the video.  We left school at lunch time and went into Nando's in Brentwood high street to film.

Before we go to the high street we stumbled across a few problems:  whilst gathering the equipment needed for the day from Rebecca's house we misplaced an important piece of apparatus which enabled us to connect the camcorder to the tripod.  Eventually after a while of searching, we found the attachment and were on our way to Brentwood.  However, once at Nando's we realised that we had forgot to pack the tripod and has to improvise the way in which we were going to film.

After a good think about how we were going to approach filming, everything fell into place and our last day of filming was successful.

Sunday, October 16, 2011

At the beginning of the video the mood seems fairly dark and sombre until the female character 'Kate Nash' walks through the darkness and the camera focuses on her face immediately ensuring fans and other watchers know that this is her video and her music making fans more likely to continue watching.

Then a close up shows a pair of stylish shoes that appear quite fun and quirky representing the genre and style of Kate herself.

The video next shows imagery of old fashioned style music equipment eg vinyl Dec's something that portrays Kate's vintage style and a theme we also want to represent within our video maybe to begin with.

More shots of the floor are then shown and all characters appear to have unusual and vibrant clothes and footwear.Representing the pop theme of the video and the fancy dress theme.
High angle shots are then used during the party scene to represent the amount of people squeezed into what seems an average house and room size. Representing the character as normal allowing viewers to identify with them.

A two shot is then done with Kate and the main male character to suggest a relationship and closeness between them suggesting intimacy.
Next the camera pans up Kate's outfit which appears in keeping with her theme and personality a classic style vibrant red dress with her signature short bob and fridge.

Then her and other party guests continue to break into a short dance routine used in time with the tempo of the song.To attempt to show a fun side of the video but also represents kates unusual personality and unwillingness to conform to the dancing styles of other party goers.

The action of the video then cut to parallel editing of the continuing party and then the mining monologues of Kate herself in a separate room suggesting not only her separation from her male friend but the isolation from the other guests.
Kate Nash then changes costume into a wedding dress representing her loneliness and desperation for a relationship and possibly marriage.

Then close ups of Kate being dragged away in her dress are shown maybe representing her relationship being pulled appart as this happens the mood of the video seems to change as the tempo slows and the scene becomes morbid and dark as it began. Suggesting the glimmer of hope between the 2 characters has come and now gone again.

As Kate herself is pushed into the swimming pool close ups of the previously fun loving party goers shows them motionless and trance like. As if the mood and the atmosphere of the party has been seriously been disrupted by the cause of whatever led Kate's hands to be stained with red blood.

And as the song fades out  Kate is seen lying back drowned in the pool confusing watchers as what first seemed to be an upbeat normal Kate Nash song has taken a u turn in to unusual territory.
Overall the video has an extremely sombre mood and the narrative seems to show the blossoming of love between 2 people initially but the murder and lies of the 2 main characters that seems to lead to a brutal ganging up of party goers leading to the murder of the once happy character.

Maslows triangle

Abraham Maslow is an American psychologist who suggests that each person has different layers of need and work through each until self actualization is reached he suggests that each 'layer' needs to be satisfied before a person can successfully move on to the next. However Maslow does suggest that most people never really successfully make their way through all the layers so never truly reach self actualisation.
The first music video was accepted into society due to a person's want to be someone else. A person accepts and interprets the video to suit the music. By discovering new videos they gain status from listening to certain things who others have yet to discover. This obviously causing a constant need for new upcoming music and music videos. psychologists have done various studies into what people listen to, and when asked what music they like they often don't say the music they really like (such as guilty pleasures) they would say something that suits the person they want to be. The music they say they like tends to fit into main stream norms, and not the person they truly are.

socio-economic beliefs

Survival: Those that want security and like routine

Social Climbers: Those who have strong materialistic drive and like status symbols

Care givers: Those who believe in caring and sharing

Explorers: For whom personal growth and influencing social change are important

Example of a programme that may appeal to consumers
in the 'Social Climbers' category

By looking at these categories of consumers within the population companies can purposely create a programme to suit their target audience or the people they know are already watching their channel and create another similar programme to further appeal to their audience. For example creators of 'The only way is Essex' would expect their programme to appeal to social climber rather than care givers based on the content and over all theme of the programme, whereas a programme about the state of NHS hospitals in Britain would be more likely to appeal to Care givers. When producing programmes or any other type of media product companies keep these titles in mind to ensure they are able to create a programme that appeals to at least one of the groups to ensure they have a steady target audience.

Demographics

A common and widely used method of audience research is called demographics. This is a system that  is used to define certain groups of people in society this is done mainly by researching and categorising their jobs and lifestyle mainly  largely by the occupation that they have. It categorises the population of the UK into six clear groups and uses a lettering code to describe the individual in that groups income and job type.

Producers know the importance of  the demographics of their potential audience as they know  they can adapt to their product they have produced whether it be text or product to appeal to a group with well recorded  viewing habits.

For example if producers at a television company were wanting to produce a DIY programme there target audience would be C2 demographic and maybe D.

However this system does fail to aware the media producer of some important information  they may wish to know, such as each groups members  income and how much each has to budget each week. Some skilled manual workers earn the same amount every week as a teacher but they are unlikely to consume and spend their money in the same way.

Also these demographics only focus on the main earner of a household and fail to include other member of a household such as younger children who may be interested in a completely different product or text
Barb stand for the (Broadcasters audience research board) they are in charge of collecting and reporting on the rating of certain television channels and the various programmes they show. It is important for tv channels to see what percent of the population is watching their programmes to ensure their channel and its programmes remain popular and therefore profitable.
Anyone can go on the BARB website and look at the viewing figure for any channel. It shows you the top 30 programmes for a particular month  that have been shown on the channels. Companies such as this allow television companies to view the rating for their programmes and ensure that they are collecting sufficient viewing figures and reaching their target audience. This can also be used in favour of advertising companies as they can see when the most amount of viewers are watching a particular programme and attempt to buy advertising time in the break in order to have the opportunity to sell products to a huge audience. For the company Apple may choose to advertise their 'ipod' during the programme 'Jersey shore' as they are aware that many people watching MTV have an interest in music and musical equipment and they will be aware that 'Jersey Shore' was the most watched programme on the channel from the 19th- 25th September with 196,000 viewers tuning in.

Defining an audience

An audience is needed other wise there would be no need to create a text or product as they are always crested to be sell able and appeal to a certain target audience. The size of an audience and there reaction or consumption of a product or programme usually determine the success of a product eg sales figures and viewing figures are key in the success of an album or a television programme.Audience of media products consume the product and are therefor fulling the companies success and proving funding and income for the particular media company

Much of the media now available for us is free of charge and is usually financed by advertising and companies often pay huge amounts of money to get prime advertising space during various programmes for example anti-aging products may pay large amounts of money to advertise during a programme aimed at older women as they know their target audience will be watching hopefully leading to a number of sales from this audience. Companies want to know how many people and what type of audience they are selling to to maximise the changes of sales.

As the media becomes more Central to our lives people want to know and understand what we consume and the effects of this consumption has on our lives often television programmes films and video games have been blamed for the behaviour of some consumers for example it has been suggested that the Jamie Bolger killers were influenced from a scene of the film 'childsplay' which may had caused them to display this abnormal behaviour and eventually live to the murder.

Mass media is when companies try to appeal to a large market of people which is usually over 20million on the other hand the term 'narrow casting' refers to a company who is wanting to appeal to a smaller niche market of people who are of a particular stereotype or interested in a particular hobby. For example MTV is a music channel mainly aimed at teenagers, Sky sports is usually aimed at men who are interested in sports and BBC Parliament is often viewed by men who have an interest in government and politics.
